A really useful notification feature coming in iOS 12 is Critical Alerts. With all the talk about silencing and cleaning up notifications, Critical Alerts bypass these to deliver important or urgent information to the user. These alerts will play a sound and appear on the lock screen no matter what. Critical Alert usage in an app will have to be approved by Apple, so not every app gets to use it. They are meant primarily for health, security, and public safety.
