The second-generation Butterfly Keyboard has been in the news lately for being susceptible to dust issues, causing unintentional inputs or lack thereof. The sudden release of a third-generation keyboard has shown that there is a silicone membrane to possibly prevent dust from entering. Now, Apple has confirmed that this was intended. This was acknowledged in documents to Apple Authorized Service Providers for repairs. Regardless of what may have happened internally at Apple, this was a quick response to the recent events concerning the keyboards.
