In the rare event that the logic board fails on a previous MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, Apple has a way of recovering the data using an external tool to migrate the data. This is required because the SSD is non-removable. However, the 2018 MacBook Pros appear to not be able to use this recovery method due to the internal port being removed [Source:
iFixit]. This is because of the new T2 chip, which acts as hardware encryption for the SSD. Apple is advising technicians to tell customers to frequently backup because of this [Source:
MacRumors]. While this may seem dangerous, it is very rare for a logic board to fail under normal use, so this is no cause for alarm.
