Remembering Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs passed away seven years ago today, October 5, 2011. To me, he represented Apple's golden era, giving us products we didn't know we needed and never following the competition. He was Apple's best leader. When Steve was in charge, you could look at the "smartphone" section of a Target and you would see a ton of cheap phones surrounding the iPhone. The iPhone stood out. It was new, different, but with no compromises. It was truly the ultimate phone. Polished and stable software and always pushing the boundaries of what a phone can do. You can hardly say that today with the current competition. Steve Jobs was truly a crazy one.

Apple actually still has a memorial hosted on their website to Steve Jobs. It has different posts from people around the world. Many of them are from 2011, which make for some interesting trips down memory lane.

Steve Jobs: The Italian Clothing Brand

Every once in a while, you come across a story like this and you have to read it twice. But then you realize, if it was possible, someone had to do it. Today, we look into how an Italian clothing brand acquired the right to use "Steve Jobs" as its name [Source: The Verge]. Vincenzo and Giacomo Barbato had a clothing brand and named it "Steve Jobs" in 2012 since Apple did not have it trademarked. Interesting choice, seeing as the brand had a stunning lack of black turtle necks. But it doesn't stop there. Their logo is a "J" with a bite taken out of the side, with the signature Apple leaf on top. Apple obviously sued, but the brothers won the right to use the name and logo. Apparently, the letter "J" isn't edible. Shocking, I know. But because of that, it would not be mistaken for an apple. Personally, when I look at the Apple logo, I'm not reminded of the fruit the most of the time, just because the logo is so iconic. But that aside, when the context is Steve Jobs, I'm immediately going to think that the clothing brand has some association with Apple. At this point, how could a story that's so bad, it's good, get any better? According to Business Insider Italia, these brothers are working on selling electronics. A bit of a leap from clothing to technology. I'm sure they will be amazing.

Steve Jobs Manga

Mari Yamazaki has created a manga based on the Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson. The first book in the series details his life up until 1974. While it's written entirely in Japanese, it's a must-have for those interested in both Steve Jobs' life and Japanese culture. It's available on Amazon from mostly used sellers for less than $10.

Apple Park

Apple has announced that Apple Campus 2 will be called "Apple Park." The new campus will open in April. In addition, the theater within Apple Park will be named the "Steve Jobs Theater," in honor of the late CEO, who would've turned 62 this Friday. The campus definitely looks Apple. I'm looking forward to visiting it eventually.

Apple Releases 'Designed by Apple in California' Book

Apple announced today that they will be selling a book called 'Designed by Apple in California' starting tomorrow in the memory of Steve Jobs. The book contains 450 photographs of Apple products from the past 20 years. This book has been made over the past 8 years, which makes me wonder if Steve Jobs commissioned this project himself. Either way, it's quite expensive. The 10.20" x 12.75" size is $199 and the 13" x 16.25" is $299.

Robert Palladino Passes Away At The Age Of 83

Late last month, Robert Palladino, the calligrapher that inspired Steve Jobs and some of Apple's fonts, passed away at the age of 83. Palladino was a Trappist monk who worked doing what he loved and helped nurture the potential of to-be designers, such as Sumner Stone, the designer of the ITC Stone font. One could argue that if it weren't for Palladino, we wouldn't have fonts on computers.
"None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But 10 years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts."
- Steve Jobs
While Palladino never used a computer, he had a large amount of influence on how text on computers look today.

One Minute For Steve Jobs

It's been four years since the death of Steve Jobs, however people still honor him in various ways. The Apple Museum I mentioned yesterday created a site that allows you to dedicate a minute of silence in remembrance of Steve Jobs and other cancer victims. Just go to the website, start the timer, do your minute of silence, and watch the amount of minutes contributed go up by one. Their goal is to reach 29,774,880 minutes, which is about how many minutes Steve lived. Please help reach the goal. They ask of no money, just a minute of your time. Not just for Steve, but for anyone suffering from cancer.

An unofficial Apple Museum has been opened and it features the world's largest collection of Apple products. It's in Prague. It contains almost every Apple product from 1976 to 2012. There are 472 private exhibits, it is 767 square meters of exhibition space, and it has a vegan restaurant (in honor of Steve Jobs). If you'd like to learn more, check out their website.

Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine

Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine is a documentary that will be released on September 4th of this year. It just had a trailer released. You can watch it below. However, Eddie Cue was disappointed in the trailer, saying that it depicted Jobs in a negative, false light. What do you think? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

Third Anniversary of Steve Jobs' Passing

Today marks the third anniversary of Steve Job's passing. In honor of this, Tim Cook has issued a memo to Apple employees, asking them to remember Steve Jobs and how he "made our world better."
"Team,
Sunday will mark the third anniversary of Steve's passing. I'm sure that many of you will be thinking of him on that day, as I know I will.
I hope you'll take a moment to appreciate the many ways Steve made our world better. Children learn in new ways thanks to the products he dreamed up. The most creative people on earth use them to compose symphonies and pop songs, and write everything from novels to poetry to text messages. Steve's life's work produced the canvas on which artists now create masterpieces.
Steve's vision extended far beyond the years he was alive, and the values on which he built Apple will always be with us. Many of the ideas and projects we're working on today got started after he died, but his influence on them -- and on all of us -- is unmistakeable.
Enjoy your weekend, and thanks for helping carry Steve's legacy into the future.
Tim"

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become."
- Steve Jobs
I remember watching Steve Jobs saying this at his famous speech at Stanford University. He truly lived by these words. May Steve Jobs rest in peace.

One year anniversary of Steve Jobs' Passing

It's been one year since Steve Jobs has left us and Apple has issued a statement and has made a video.

Apple's CEO wrote:
"Steve’s passing one year ago today was a sad and difficult time for all of us. I hope that today everyone will reflect on his extraordinary life and the many ways he made the world a better place.

One of the greatest gifts Steve gave to the world is Apple. No company has ever inspired such creativity or set such high standards for itself. Our values originated from Steve and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple. We share the great privilege and responsibility of carrying his legacy into the future.

I’m incredibly proud of the work we are doing, delivering products that our customers love and dreaming up new ones that will delight them down the road. It’s a wonderful tribute to Steve’s memory and everything he stood for. - Tim"
