AirPort Line of Products No Longer Available

The AirPort line of products was officially discontinued back in April. However, Apple did allow users to deplete their stock before pulling the products from their shelves. Now, the AirPort Extreme and the 2 TB Time Capsule have reached their limit and are no longer available from Apple. With this, we no longer have any AirPort products to look for. Only refurbished models are available from Apple at this point.

AirPort Express Gains AirPlay 2 Support

AirPort Express users got a surprise update today, granting their devices support for AirPlay 2. Keep in mind that the entire AirPort line of products has been discontinued earlier this year. The AirPort Express has a headphone jack that can be plugged into any audio output device to effectively turn it into an AirPlay speaker. AirPlay 2 will enable multi-room audio. To get this feature for your AirPort Express, use the AirPort Utility app to install the 7.8 firmware update.

AirPort Officially Discontinued

AirPort products were officially discontinued by Apple today, meaning any remaining stock will be the last we'll see of it [Source: iMore]. AirPort products were wireless routers made by Apple. The AirPort Time Capsule supported wireless Time Machine backup and the AirPort Express supported AirPlay. I can understand why Apple would want to discontinue this line, since it wasn't integral to Apple's main ecosystem, but I feel like if they expanded it with more unique features and advertised it more, it could've sold better. I would like it if they made them into iBeacons, so you could automate HomeKit devices when you're near one. Regardless, it's clear Apple wants to move onto bigger and better things.

New AirPort Extreme and Time Capsules Coming Soon?

The Federal Communications Commission requires base stations like the AirPort Extreme to be regulated to a standard of security. Because of this, Apple may have plans to update their line of base stations. This follows reports of Apple Retail Stores having a limited supply of these products. Albeit a small refresh, this seems to suggest that new models may be coming in the near future.
