Because there currently isn't a formal "homeOS," HomePod will be updated through an iOS device and the Home app. HomePod runs a flavor of iOS, which isn't too crazy [Source: 9to5Mac]. Apple TV ran iOS at one point, and it's now tvOS. What's interesting is if we'll get yearly updates at WWDC regarding HomePod's software. Maybe at one point, they'll merge tvOS and HomePod's software to create homeOS.
